OK! I’d like to introduce you to ‘Shockwave Therapy at BodyRight Physiotherapy’, a relatively new treatment that is proven to stimulate quicker healing times for bone and soft tissue injuries, and is effective in breaking down unwanted calcification in soft tissues.

There is a wealth of quality research on this non-invasive  therapy which is becoming the new gold standard in the treatment of stubborn or ‘Chronic’ issues such as

  • Lateral epicondylosis/epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)
  • Medial epicondylosis/epicondylitis  (Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Patellar tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)
  • Achilles tendinopathies
  • Proximal hamstring Tendinopathy
  • Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome (Trochanteric Bursitis)
  • Rotator Cuff tendinopathies
  • Calcified tendons
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Carpal tunnel Syndrome
  • Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head
  • Delayed bone healing

How does Shockwave work?

Using audible pressure waves as a mechanical stimulus that causes a biological effect of increased rate of cellular division and differentiation, creating a stem cell like effect on tissue healing.

What are the advantages of Shockwave?

Shockwave is non-invasive, and it has no down time afterwards unlike the alternative treatments such as Steroid injections and surgery. In fact recent research shows that Shockwave has been shown to reduce the need for surgery* , thereby reducing recovery rates, complication risk and improving patient satisfaction levels. Treatment is relatively quick at about 15 minutes as a stand alone treatment or can be done as part of a full physiotherapy session.

Do I need a referral?

Whilst we accept referrals from other Physiotherapists, GPs and Consultants, though you can also attend for Shockwave treatment without a referral as our Chartered Physiotherapist will take a thorough history and do a physical examination to check whether Shockwave is a suitable treatment for you and your condition.

How many sessions will I need?

Many patients will feel an improvement immediately, and need only 2-3 sessions over 6-12 weeks for complete healing. Other people will need up to 6 sessions and include as part of an overall Physiotherapy program. Our Physiotherapists are also highly experienced Manual therapists and experts in exercise rehab prescription so we have every angle covered to get you back to doing what you love.  A complete program will often include eccentric strengthening to load tendon which helps the fibers align correctly as they heal. The great thing about Shockwave is that if its going to work it usually shows some improvement after the first session.

What are the success rates?

Here are some success rates documented in double blind, randomized controlled studies shows:

91% improvement in Calcific tendinitis of the Shoulder

95% improvement in Myofascial trigger points

85% improvement in Hamstring injuries

76% improvement in Jumpers knee

84% improvement in Plantar Fascitis
